The Port of Gothenburg acquire land for westward expansion
The Port of Gothenburg has completed a major land acquisition in the outer areas of the port, marking a significant step forward in its long-term expansion strategy. The agreement, signed with Platzer, creates new opportunities to support the continued growth and development of one of the Nordic region’s most important logistics hubs. The total transaction value, including a smaller property sale, amounts to SEK 684 million.
The acquisition includes land, office properties, and water areas, opening up the potential for approximately 210,000 square meters of new terminal space in the future. As part of the overall deal, a logistics property located at the port entrance has also been divested, resulting in a net transaction cost of SEK 684 million.
According to Göran Eriksson, the move is a natural progression aligned with the port’s long-term development plans. The expansion is expected to strengthen the port’s capacity to meet growing demand while maintaining its role in supporting the global competitiveness of Swedish industry.
The Gothenburg region, widely recognised as a leading logistics location in the Nordics, is set to benefit further from the transaction. The deal enhances conditions for industrial investment and growth while enabling the continued implementation of the port’s strategic development objectives.
This latest acquisition also represents a logical continuation of decades of westward expansion, which began in the 1970s with the development of the Älvsborg RoRo terminal. More recently, the nearby Arendal 2 project added substantial new terminal capacity, and construction is currently underway on Stena Line’s new ferry terminal, scheduled for completion in 2031. The newly acquired property is located directly adjacent to this area, further strengthening its strategic value.
Revenue generated from the existing office buildings on the site is expected to support financing for future development. Both the acquisition and the associated divestment remain subject to approval by the municipal council, with the transfer of ownership anticipated no earlier than the fourth quarter of 2026.
Once the transaction is fully completed, more detailed plans for the development of the site are expected to be announced.
