Thomas Hoyer celebrates 70th birthday after 40 years in logistics

The Hamburg entrepreneur Thomas RJ Hoyer celebrates his 70th birthday on 1 December 2020.

Hoyer owns around 2,200 trucks, 2,400 road tankers, 50,100 IBCs, 40,800 tank containers and numerous logistics installations with depots, cleaning plants and workshops.

Hoyer Group said: “More than 40 years in the logistics sector have shaped the former managing director and current advisory board chairman, who undertook his first management responsibility for the foreign division of the family business in 1980, and has guided the development of the international logistics company and accompanies it up to the present day.”

Since 1946, the family-run transport business has developed into an international logistics services provider, specialising in handling and transporting liquid goods.

Thomas Hoyer is very much aware of the successful logistics specialist’s roots: “My father, Walter Hoyer, founded the company in the wasteland of Hamburg’s ruins. He had a vision and a clear purpose in mind. Even today, I often think, ‘What might he say now?’.”

Thomas Hoyer’s training years already began in his schooldays, when he regularly went to the headquarters in Hamburg after lessons. Later he studied in St. Gallen in Switzerland, followed by an apprenticeship in freight forwarding.

Finally, after two years abroad, he took over responsibility for the foreign division of Hoyer in 1980. As Managing Director, he steered the company’s destiny since 1986, before taking over as chairman of the advisory board in 2007.
