Torghatten and Myklebust Verft build the world’s two largest hydrogen ships

Torghatten Nord has selected the Norwegian Myklebust Shipyard for the construction of two groundbreaking hydrogen ferries set to operate on Norway’s longest ferry route, connecting Bodø and Lofoten and accommodating up to 120 cars each. These vessels will be the largest hydrogen-powered ships globally and will be fueled with hydrogen produced locally in Bodø.

Marius Hansen, managing director of Torghatten Nord, expressed pride in the decision to pursue this project in Norway, highlighting the country’s technological prowess and shipyard capabilities. The agreement with Myklebust Verft, based in Gursken south of Ålesund, signifies increased staffing and activity at the shipyard, underscoring the significant impact of this project on the local economy.

Leiv Sindre Muren, CEO of Myklebust Verft, echoed the sentiment, emphasising the collaboration with Torghatten Nord and the broader maritime cluster in Norway to drive innovation, create jobs, and foster expertise in zero-emission solutions. The construction of the world’s largest hydrogen ships represents a milestone for the Norwegian maritime industry and aligns with government priorities of sustainability, innovation, and local economic development.

Transport minister John-Ivar Nygård commended the agreement, emphasising its contribution to building expertise in zero-emission solutions and supporting local industries. The project’s focus on safety, efficiency, and comfort underscores the meticulous planning required for passenger traffic over long distances in challenging maritime conditions.

With delivery scheduled for 2026, the project involves a collaboration with Norwegian suppliers and regulatory bodies to ensure adherence to safety standards and develop procedures for this novel ferry concept. Despite challenges posed by market uncertainties, the project remains on track, with a robust foundation in place to realise its ambitious goals.

As Torghatten Nord prepares to introduce these groundbreaking ferries into service, the project stands as a testament to Norway’s leadership in maritime innovation and sustainability.
