Union Pacific Railroad’s newest commemorative locomotive No. 4547 embarks on first freight mission hauling Artemis III Rocket parts
Union Pacific Railroad has unveiled its newest commemorative locomotive, No. 4547, as it embarked on its first freight mission transporting Space Launch System (SLS) solid rocket motor segments for NASA’s Artemis III lunar exploration programme.
The locomotive departed from a shipping facility near Corinne, Utah, carrying critical rocket components that will support NASA’s efforts to return humans to the Moon. Joining the journey was No. 1616, Union Pacific’s commemorative locomotive honouring President Abraham Lincoln, who established the railroad through the Pacific Railway Act of 1862.
A special ceremony was held to mark both the shipment and the christening of No. 4547, attended by Union Pacific executives, state officials, and representatives from Northrop Grumman, NASA, and Wabtec. The locomotive was created to honour President Donald J. Trump and commemorate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
The shipment highlights the collaboration between the rail, aerospace, and manufacturing sectors in supporting the Artemis programme. Northrop Grumman, which produces the rocket boosters, emphasised the role of American innovation and industry in advancing future space exploration.
Built by Wabtec, No. 4547 is the third locomotive in Union Pacific’s presidential series, joining No. 1616, dedicated to Abraham Lincoln, and No. 4141, which honours President George H.W. Bush. The new locomotive symbolises both the nation’s transportation heritage and its continued pursuit of space exploration.
Artemis III is expected to be NASA’s second crewed Artemis mission and is intended to support future lunar exploration efforts, including a planned return of astronauts to the Moon later this decade.
