VTG and Siemens Mobility Austria partner to develop innovative freight wagon wheelset system

VTG and Siemens Mobility Austria have officially signed a partnership agreement to develop and launch an innovative wheelset system designed to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs in the European rail freight sector.

The new technology aims to significantly lower maintenance costs, minimise workshop downtime, and increase the payload capacity of freight wagons, supporting more efficient and sustainable rail freight operations.

As part of the initiative, VTG has already begun introducing the first serial wheelsets into commercial operation, marking a major milestone in the transition from development to practical deployment. The market launch is being supported through funding from the German Federal Ministry for Transport, underlining the strategic importance of the technology for the future of European rail freight transport.

Representatives from VTG, including CEO Alberto Nobis and project lead Kai Roebbecke, recently travelled to Graz for the official signing ceremony, which the companies described as an important milestone in their collaboration.

The agreement also recognises the contribution of teams across VTG whose technical expertise and long-term commitment helped bring the project to this stage. Both organisations highlighted their shared belief in the growing importance of rail freight in supporting a greener and more connected European transport network.

Beyond the development of the wheelset system itself, the two companies have also agreed to strengthen broader collaboration on future rail freight innovations, reinforcing a joint commitment to advancing a more efficient, sustainable, and future-ready rail sector.
