Wabtec secures systems and software deal with ARTC to support the interoperability of Australia’s national rail network

Wabtec Corporation has announced a digital solutions agreement with Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), marking a significant step towards addressing interoperability challenges within Australia’s rail systems.

The collaboration will focus on investigating the capabilities of ARTC’s Advanced Train Management System (ATMS) solution. Wabtec will work to develop interoperability standards between ATMS and the European Rail Traffic Management System Level 2. Through close collaboration with relevant stakeholders, ARTC and Wabtec aim to outline the concept of operations and define standards to achieve interoperability.Wayne Johnson, CEO and managing director of ARTC, highlighted the importance of finding feasible solutions to enhance rail safety and competitiveness across Australia. Wabtec’s selection for the project stems from its reputation as a rail industry leader with extensive experience implementing safety critical train control solutions.

Nalin Jain, president of digital intelligence at Wabtec, emphasised that the proposed solution will unlock productivity, advance sustainability, and enhance safety across ARTC’s operations network, which spans approximately 8,500km. Moreover, the interoperability of the system offers the potential to integrate with locomotive digital solutions, further enhancing operational efficiency.

Wendy McMillan, Wabtec’s senior regional vice president for South East Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, commended ARTC’s progressive approach with ATMS. Leveraging Wabtec’s expertise and digital technologies, ARTC aims to explore the capabilities of ATMS to benefit the entire country’s supply chain.

ATMS represents the next generation of train management and safe working systems, utilising Global Positioning Systems and public cellular networks to connect track infrastructure, locomotives, and network control. It enables autonomous train-based location determination, authority and speed supervision, and enhances driver situational awareness.
